Nubia Z80 Ultra Review: Humanistic Imaging and Supreme Performance
When it comes to Nubia, people immediately think of its iconic red-ring humanistic lens and full-screen design. Recently, the Nubia Z80 Ultra was launched. While its DECO design continues the previous generation’s design language, subtle adjustments make it even more recognizable. In terms of hardware, the Nubia Z80 Ultra is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Leading Edition and three high-quality cameras, bringing comprehensive upgrades in both imaging and performance. How do these changes improve the user experience? Let’s take a closer look.
In imaging, while most brands are focusing on telephoto lenses, Nubia chose to upgrade the ultra-wide angle instead. However, a smartphone’s imaging power is not determined by one lens alone. Let’s start with the Nubia Z80 Ultra’s camera specifications. The main camera uses a 35mm humanistic storytelling lens with a 1/1.3-inch sensor and f/1.7 aperture. The ultra-wide camera features an 18mm high-dynamic lens with a 1/1.55-inch sensor and f/1.8 aperture. The telephoto lens adopts an 85mm periscope structure with a 1/2-inch sensor and f/2.48 aperture. In software, the Nubia Z80 Ultra integrates Neovision Taishan AI Imaging 5.0, providing AI assistance for photography. Overall, both hardware and software are impressive—let’s see how they perform in real samples.
Photos taken by the Nubia Z80 Ultra’s main camera deliver vibrant colors and excellent detail resolution. Cloud contours transition naturally—neither overly soft nor too sharp—achieving a balanced result. When lacking inspiration during street photography, you can try the camera’s built-in AI Inspiration Assistant, which offers shooting suggestions to help you capture perfect shots. If you are unsatisfied with the default color tone, the Nubia Z80 Ultra also includes a Filter Factory with nine unique filters. Among them, the Bresson filter enhances light and shadow texture, making tonal contrast the core of your composition.
Under the Negative filter, photos appear clean and layered, with a film-like quality—ideal for street photography enthusiasts.
The ultra-wide lens is the most significant upgrade on the Nubia Z80 Ultra. Compared to its predecessor, it delivers greater dynamic range, restoring more shadow detail even in high-contrast lighting. Sample shots show clear gradation between light and dark areas with natural visuals and preserved shadow details.
The periscope telephoto lens also offers strong resolution—images are sharp and detailed without relying on AI enhancement. Moving on to night photography, issues like focus hunting, neon light interference, and color inaccuracies are common. To counter these, the Nubia Z80 Ultra introduces laser autofocus and a Flicker multi-spectral color temperature sensor. The resulting images show accurate colors without glare, with precise focusing and impressive low-light performance.
For professional users, Nubia also launched a Photography Kit for the Z80 Ultra. Once attached, the phone transforms into a retro-style camera, allowing users to adjust exposure compensation and filters through physical dials—helping them capture decisive moments more intuitively.
Imaging flagships often fall short in performance compared to gaming flagships, but the Nubia Z80 Ultra combines both. It features the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Leading Edition, full-power LPDDR5X, and UFS 4.1 storage—forming a so-called “Supreme Iron Triangle” of hardware for top-tier gaming performance. Additionally, it uses the same gaming engine as the Red Magic series, optimizing frame rates, temperature, and power consumption. To test its performance, we ran Genshin Impact and Honor of Kings under 25°C ambient temperature and 200 nits brightness. In Honor of Kings (Ultra Frame Rate + Ultra Graphics) for 30 minutes, the average frame rate reached 119.9 FPS with an average power draw of 3.2W. In Genshin Impact (Ultra settings) for 30 minutes, it achieved 59.5 FPS and 3.98W average power.
From these high-load gaming tests, the Nubia Z80 Ultra demonstrated stable frame rates and excellent power efficiency. Thanks to its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Leading Edition chip and Red Magic-level game engine optimization, the Z80 Ultra delivers Ultra-grade gaming performance. Battery life is also solid, featuring a 7200mAh 4th-gen Nanhai battery capable of lasting all day. Furthermore, Nubia will introduce game-specific optimizations for Honor of Kings, Delta Force, League of Legends Mobile, and Arena Breakout. Notably, Arena Breakout will support full-map ray tracing at 90 FPS and 2K+120 FPS gameplay—its optimization being the most impressive.
Beyond visuals and frame rate, immersion is also vital to gaming. The Nubia Z80 Ultra adopts a Sky Full-Screen design for deeper immersion. It also narrows the bezels for a more refined display. Notably, while the Z70 Ultra used a sharp-edged DECO frame with less comfortable grip, the Z80 Ultra replaces it with rounded edges for improved ergonomics.
The Z80 Ultra also debuts Nebula AIOS 2, featuring two major upgrades: Super Search and Smart Call. Super Search allows users to search local documents by content, not just file names—it can even locate notes within the memo app. Smart Call provides AI answering and type-to-speak options. When busy, users can let AI answer calls automatically and summarize the conversation afterward. Alternatively, by typing messages, the AI will vocalize them to the caller and convert their responses into text in real time—making communication more flexible and intelligent.
While other smartphones compete over telephoto capabilities, Nubia Z80 Ultra’s focus on ultra-wide upgrades seems to remind us: don’t just chase distant beauty—appreciate what’s right before your eyes. The evolution of its AI assistant “Xiaoxing” fosters better human connection. Enhanced performance means smoother experiences, reducing frustration after a long day. If you want to experience Nubia’s unique warmth and human touch, this is a phone you can confidently choose.
