Nubia Z80 Ultra Review: Redefining Street Photography with 35mm Vision
Since the introduction of custom optics in 2022, the 35mm main camera has become the soul label of Nubia’s flagship imaging lineup. In Nubia’s view, the goal of this choice is clear: to capture more stunning humanistic masterpieces.
Indeed, the 23–28mm wide-angle view may be more “practical” for the general public, but “practicality” is not the only criterion that defines a flagship camera phone. The core mission of a true imaging flagship is to help creators produce more astonishing works. Especially in this era of mass sharing, Nubia has positioned “street photography” as the core scene, and the Z80 Ultra must therefore provide a unique “humanistic perspective.”
The Z80 Ultra is equipped with the fifth-generation native 35mm custom optical lens, featuring a 50MP sensor, an f/1.7 large aperture, and a 1/1.3-inch “Light and Shadow Master 990” custom flagship sensor. The shooting experience it delivers is fundamentally different! Unlike a 23mm main camera that makes you habitually “step back for a wider view,” this one encourages you to “step forward” and focus on your subject. In street photography, the 35mm focal length naturally excels at highlighting the main subject, separating cluttered backgrounds, and giving the frame a stronger sense of storytelling. It offers a perspective closer to what the human eye sees—a purer humanistic view. The confidence behind this experience comes from its absolute faith in “native” image quality!
Mainstream 50MP one-inch 23mm main cameras on the market need 1.5x zoom cropping to achieve a 35mm view, resulting in only about 22MP of image quality. In contrast, Nubia Z80 Ultra’s native 35mm lens can directly produce 50MP high-definition images, with a clear advantage in sharpness! Additionally, the Z80 Ultra comes with an 18mm high-dynamic ultra-wide main camera featuring 50MP resolution and a 1/1.55-inch large sensor, as well as a 64MP periscope telephoto lens with OIS that also supports 15cm tele-macro photography. All three lenses are coated with blue glass IR filters and assisted by laser autofocus and a Flicker multispectral color temperature sensor.
From a configuration standpoint, the Nubia Z80 Ultra continues the triple-camera design of its predecessor, with an upgraded 35mm large sensor and solid specifications. However, the variable aperture is missing this time—which is understandable since many brands are gradually phasing it out. “Street photography” is all about capturing the moment! To serve that purpose, the Z80 Ultra features a physical shutter button. Although many Ultra flagships now have such buttons, most are merely “paying tribute” to the iPhone. The Z80 Ultra, however, is different—it’s equipped with a two-stage button!
As for the experience, it’s both “retro” and “efficient”! This two-stage button perfectly replicates a camera’s control logic: half-press to focus, full-press to shoot. When the screen is locked, a long press instantly launches the camera. This kind of muscle-memory operation is incredibly practical!
Meanwhile, the Nubia Z80 Ultra comes with an “AI Rapid Motion Capture” feature. When you press the shutter, it’s not just about high shutter speeds and fast autofocus—behind it lies an adaptive shutter algorithm that accurately detects object speed and direction, while AI multi-frame noise reduction optimizes background quality. This powerful combo ensures stability when capturing decisive moments—like rotating windmills or running children—significantly boosting your success rate in street photography!
Even cooler, the Nubia Z80 Ultra is equipped with a professional AI imaging large model directly integrated into the shooting interface. Tap the AI icon in the top-left corner of the camera app to activate “Inspiration Assistant”—essentially a built-in photography coach. For beginners unfamiliar with composition, this feature is extremely user-friendly! Once AI assistance is enabled, just point the lens at a person, and the “Pose Optimization” feature will automatically detect faces, recommend matching portrait templates, and draw pose lines. When shooting pets or food, the “Aesthetic Composition” function displays solid circles and rings on the screen as composition guides. You simply move your phone until they align, and the AI automatically adjusts zoom to help you lock in the best composition.
Even more impressively, AI also includes a “Voice Guidance” function! Open the camera and just ask your question aloud—the phone instantly responds with vocal shooting tips. Behind this is the AI imaging model’s real-time analysis through the lens. For instance, when the author took a photo of a doorway and asked how to make it look more artistic, the Z80 Ultra replied instantly: “The depth is good—try shooting upward to emphasize the lines for a more artistic feel.” Incredible! It can even teach such fine details!
Nubia has also launched a professional photography kit for the Z80 series, which includes a handle case, smart camera control bar, filter adapter ring, and cold shoe mount. With this full set, you’ll instantly transform into a professional street photographer!
